Networking & Panel: Your Future in Tech

At a time when the future of technology is being debated globally, the ACM-W UQ Student Chapter was thrilled to host “Networking and Panel: Your Future in Tech”—an evening of rich discussion, learning, and inspiration.
The event brought together three leading industry professionals and employers of students in tech and computing, who generously shared their time and insights on the current and emerging demands of tech jobs in Australia.
The panel unanimously agreed that, now more than ever, as AI reshapes work practices across sectors, the future of tech careers is increasingly people-centred.
We especially appreciated their advice to “know your worth” and “stay curious.” They emphasized the importance of looking beyond fleeting trends to develop translatable skills, maintain curiosity, and pursue long-term career fulfilment.
Listening to the panel reaffirmed the critical role of qualified computer scientists, software engineers, and tech professionals in safeguarding Australia’s digital economy. It also helped dispel the myth that AI is poised to replace IT jobs.
This isn’t the first time—and certainly won’t be the last—that we’ve seen a transformative technology emerge. What’s clear is that our industry leaders and student employers are seeking tech talent with a human-centred approach to technological transformation—professionals who go beyond technical proficiency to bring innovation, empathy, and adaptability to their work.
Student Reflections

“It was truly inspiring to see enthusiastic women come together for ACM-W panel event at UQ. The panellists shared their journeys with warmth and honesty, creating an open space for genuine connection. Events like this show how, by believing in ourselves and supporting one another, women can drive diversity, creativity, and innovation across the tech community.”

“I have attended a fair few panel discussions (both online and offline), and let me tell you, this was definitely one of the best ones I’ve been to! Mary-Anne, Jo and Mike were all insaaanely knowledgeable and we all learnt so much; I am not even exaggerating – I think everyone in that room could’ve stayed for 3 more hours. It was specially comforting when the panelists affirmed that, as tech professionals, jobs will be around despite the AI boom (personally, I needed to hear that). Shoutout to the wonderful team at ACM-W as well, everything was so well thought out and organised, well done!”We are deeply grateful to our speakers and attendees for making this event a success. Events like these remind us that the future of tech lies not only in advancing technology but also in empowering people—especially women and underrepresented voices—to lead that change with confidence, skill, and compassion.
